RE: Distinguishing between Renal Cell Carcinoma and Fat Poor Angiomyolipoma in Diffusion-Weighted Imaging

چکیده
We have read with interest the article of Ding et al. (1), entitled “Comparison of biexponential and monoexponential model of diffusion-weighted imaging for distinguishing between common renal cell carcinoma and fat poor angiomyolipoma”, which was published in the Nov-Dec. 2016 issue of the journal. The study provides useful information. However, we would like to add a few comments. Angiomyolipoma (AML), the most common tumor of mesenchymal origin, is characterised morphologically by abnormal vessels, smooth muscle cells and fatty tissue (1). It is considered as neoplasia based on the metastatic potential of some epithelioid type AMLs. Most epithelioid type AMLs are benign; but lesions with hypercellularity, atypia, and necrosis, are considered as potentially malignant Letter to the Editor

Comparison of Biexponential and Monoexponential Model of Diffusion-Weighted Imaging for Distinguishing between Common Renal Cell Carcinoma and Fat Poor Angiomyolipoma
OBJECTIVE To compare the diagnostic accuracy of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM)-derived parameters and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in distinguishing between renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and fat poor angiomyolipoma (AML). MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-three patients with pathologically confirmed renal tumors were included in the study. All patients underwent renal 1.5T MRI, including...
متن کاملSmall solid renal masses: characterization by diffusion-weighted MRI at 3 T.
AIM To describe the appearance of small solid renal lesions (≤3 cm) on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to determine whether ADC measurements may help to differentiate benign from malignant small solid renal masses. METHODS AND MATERIALS Thirty-five patients with 47 small renal masses (23 malignant, 24 benign) who underwent 3 T MRI of the kidney using diffusion-weighted...
متن کاملUtility of intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging in differentiating renal cell carcinoma from angiomyolipoma
We discussed the utility of intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI) for discriminating clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) from angiomyolipoma (AML). Preoperative IVIM-DWI parameter (ADC,D, D and f) values were compared between the ccRCC (n = 37) and AML (n = 28) groups. AML exhibited significantly lower ADC ([1.35±0.29] × 10-3 mm2/s vs [1.77 ± 0.41] × 10-3 mm2/s)...
متن کاملFat-poor angiomyolipoma with cyst-like changes mimicking a cystic renal cell carcinoma: a case report
Angiomyolipoma is a common benign renal tumor. It is typically composed of adipose tissue and hence is easily diagnosed by using imaging methods such as ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. However, it is difficult to differentiate an atypical angiomyolipoma such as a fat-poor angiomyolipoma from a malignant tumor by using these imaging methods. We report a case...

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is useful in the characterization of renal masses. The MR imaging manifestations and pathologic diagnoses of 82 renal masses were reviewed and correlated. The MR imaging appearance of clear cell type renal cell carcinoma varies depending on the presence of cystic components, hemorrhage, and necrosis. Papillary renal cell carcinomas appear as well-encapsulated mas...
